She writes about the difficulties of treating a child with selective mutism, portraying the difficulties, but also instilling hope that he can recover. It is a heart wrenching tale of a troubled youth and someone who really cared. All of Hayden's work seems to have one underlying theme which is a belief that those children that so many have given up on can actually get better and be competent members of our society because one person cared enough to see them through their tough times.
