For a first time novelist, Saving Angelfish has far exceeded my expectations. A book filled with such striking poignancy, whilst simultaneously eerily embittered, truthful, and dirty. Maxella is a heroine that I will remember for all of my days, and Matheson is a writer that as far as I'm concerned- is here to stay.

Maxella's story is gritty, her neighborhood unforgiving and dangerous, but she's still just a girl, a young girl at that, trying to find her way in the already crippling Los Angeles. Heroin makes things much rougher, but Maxella's spirit is worthy enough for a novel on its' own. Please keep writing Michele Matheson- you give us novices something to look forword to.
