So who is Miranda July and why was this movie so well received? She's a performance artist, you say? What does that even mean? She seems to be not very good at a lot of things-acting, writing, directing, music. Her debut film is an uneasy mixture of the cute and the creepy, often involving children. Like a little moppet who has an online discussion with someone about poop or the older guy who leaves dirty messages on his window for two teenage girls. July plays a, surprise!, performance artist who finds love with the guy from "Deadwood." While it has its moments, July's tone is self-conscious and cloying and her story shallow and uninvolving. She does have a cool name though.
