Brooks excels at putting a positive spin on her year through thorough telling research, vivid language, and genuine depth of feeling. Her several stories reel you in and just as doom seems emminent, reshape into tales of hope. The book made me wonder, "How would I cope?" Just as an herbalist female mentor is persecuted, her young apprentice does much to tend the villagers' wounds. A compelling and memorable read!
