The story unfolds over the course of 20 or so years, ending right after the events and aftermath of September 11, 2001. The story alternates between the daily life of Nazneen and letters written by her sister Hasina. Ali's writing is wonderful: funny, sharp and deeply moving; and explores the power of personal choice (particularly for women) and the sometimes suffocating disillusion of immigrant life.
