Mary Abercrombie, November 30, 2008

This is THE best cookbook I have used. Period. All the ingredients are readily available, the instructions are very clear and easily understood, and (best of all) everything I have made using it, has turned out perfectly. Considering that I am a novice in the kitchen, that is saying something!
This is not a cookbook for anyone trying to diet (and does not make that assertion) but is a collection of recipes for celebrations and special times. The author has sprinkled little essays throughout the book, including a history of "the dessert", and how they were not intended for everyday. So, don't expect any calorie counting or nutritional breakdown in these recipes.
That being said, there are also non-dessert baking recpies too. Breads and rolls and biscuits and scones... All beautifully presented in full color photos with excellent instructions.
Another benefit to this cookbook: for each chapter, she provides a list of tips and pointers, including things like: "if your dough does not rise, try this" or "if your crust is too sticky, try that". All of which, I really appreciated since many of these recipes are things I had never attempted before.
So, to sum up... Thanks to "The Joy of Vegan Baking" I have produced flawless pies, scones, lemon bars, cookies, and cupcakes (that are still being requested at work whenever there is a birthday) which will satisfy even the most die-hard baked-goods aficionado, as well as fool any non-vegan friends.
