Daniel H. Wilson: IMG The Powell’s Playlist: Daniel H. Wilson

Like many writers, I'm constantly haunting coffee shops with a laptop out and my headphones on. I listen to a lot of music while I write, and songs... Continue »

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

11 Stories, January 2, 2013

I admired how Cheryl Strayed juxtaposed the rugged activity of hiking through the wilderness with the schmaltzy, self-critical interior monologues. Still, the chapter entitled Box of Rain was by far the best in the book. As a former resident of Ashland, it is absolutely hilarious and right on. Plus, this book gave me the confidence to try some new things. I reasoned, if she can do that, I can probably do it, too.

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
Little Brother

11 Stories, August 11, 2012

After reading the first page of Little Brother, I couldn't put it down. The protagonist is smart and funny, and all the other characters are also fully developed yet completely different. Though I know my 15 year old nephew will understand all the techie details, for clueless dopes like me, the author explains everything in a clear and exciting way. All the tech tweeks and upgrades actually pertain to the storyline and allow the action to unfold. After reading this I want to test system, open my gadgets to see how they work, play dress up, and rock out in the streets! Mostly though, I want to learn more. Suddenly I'm curious about all the math and computer science classes offered on Coursera, which is something I consider totally bizarre.

Bee & Bird by Craig Frazier
Bee & Bird

11 Stories, August 9, 2012

When my kid was almost 2, this was her favorite book. It uses primary colors and simple graphics to miraculously build anticipation. Of course, my daughter knew what was coming and loved to shout either "Bird!" or "Bee!" Pretty amazing for her self esteem, but pretty boring for me.

Tasteful Nudes: And Other Misguided Attempts at Personal Growth and Validation by Dave Hill
Tasteful Nudes: And Other Misguided Attempts at Personal Growth and Validation

11 Stories, August 6, 2012

This book is pretty funny and totally rocks! Still, things can get pretty raw. Dave Hill tempers his hilarity with some real downers like depression and death. All in all, it was honest, heartfelt, and I assume mostly true. Rock on!
