Anna Karenina (Vintage Classics) by Leo Tolstoy
Anna Karenina (Vintage Classics)

3316music, January 1, 2013

For some reason I overlooked this book for all these years, even though I loved War and Peace. Leo Tolstoy tells a vivid story and packs his political ideas into the story throughout. His physical descriptions have clarity one seldom finds and his ability to express the communication barriers that exist between couples is spot on. While I wish he had taken the advice to skip the final chapter, I know consider this a must read. Certainly I would never have wanted to see the film without first reading the book. The book, of course, is better..................much better.

The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White by Daniel Sharfstein
The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White

3316music, April 26, 2011

This is a book that I consider to be a must read for anybody who has any interest in American History. Sharfstein's writing is articulate and compelling. He doesn't mince words and he doesn't mask the truth. His research displays our nation's past in ways that few of us ever imagined. He makes it virtually impossible for any of us to ever again perceive anything as simply black or white.
