I really enjoyed this book. I had read a Nonfiction account of the colony (The Colony by John Tayman) which was very good, but this story told as a fiction account helped me connect to the characters in a different way. This is also a "One Book, One San Diego" selection for 2012 and I'm so glad that it is. I am hoping to be able to attend one of the citywide discussions of the book this year.
I'm only on page 70 but am enjoying this book. It's more about the language and words than the story for me so far.
I have developed a vivid picture of the characters in my mind.
The kid is perspective and funny.
I can't wait to see where the story goes.
I've been on a Hawaii book kick since getting back in February. This is a fascinating, well-researched, thought provoking and sad book. It is atrocious what those in power did to those that had or were perceived to have leprosy. What humans will do to one another in amazing. I recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this book. We love Hawaii and I'm always interested in learning more about Hawaii and the culture. This book was packed full of information and written in a very readable style. You won't think of Hawaii the same after reading this. It will leave you with a new understanding and appreciation for the culture (at least it did for me).
