Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
Jellicoe Road

3wishes, June 2, 2008

The book is just as brilliant as Melina Marchettas others such as 'Saving Francesca' and 'Looking for Alabrandi'. It is however a lot more complex in the beginging at least when compared with the other two.

On the Jellicoe Road is based on a seventeen girl Taylor Markham who is struggling with finding her identity as well as trying to find her mother who had abandoned her at the age of ten. Taylor is in her last years as a boarder at the Jellicoe School where she is planing to leave and find her mother even though all she has to go on is a re-occurring dream. Meanwhile she has been nominated as the head of her house which also comes with responsibilities and power over those younger than her as well as being elected the head of the ‘Secret Underground gang’ which she is to prepare and lead into the yearly tradition of the ‘territory wars’ against the Townies led by Chaz Santangelo and the Cadets led by Jonah Griggs whom Taylor has a disorderly past with.

Taylor struggles a lot throughout the book because of her identity crisis with not knowing where she if from, constantly pushing everyone away so she doesn’t need to become attached or hurt when they leave.

The book also tell the story of the 'oroiginal five' which begins as just a novel Hannah (basically taylors guardian) happens to be writing , although it turns out to be something much more.
