The Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home by Paul Stamets
The Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home

711peterhoffman, April 21, 2014

This is a fascinating compilation of information and technical instruction. It is one of those rare reference books that are actually fun to read. If you have an interest in this field you will not be disappointed, I highly recommend it.

Beyond Civilization: Humanity's Next Great Adventure by Daniel Quinn
Beyond Civilization: Humanity's Next Great Adventure

711peterhoffman, December 27, 2013

This book was life changing for me. Whether you have read any of Daniel Quinn's other work or not this book is a perfect summary of his core message. You won't look at your life the same way after reading this book.

Out by Natsuo Kirino
Out

711peterhoffman, December 26, 2013

Out is a tense thriller about a group of friends who band together to dispose of a corpse and the subsequent fallout. Interesting plot twists and a compelling narrative keep the reader's interest and leaves you wanting more. This novel works on many levels. It is a solid crime thriller but also explores gender roles, cultural constraints and fracturing friendships and love lives. It is much more than just a fun read.

House of Holes: A Book of Raunch by Nicholson Baker
House of Holes: A Book of Raunch

711peterhoffman, December 24, 2013

A sexual amusement park serves as the backdrop for this funny, strange and sometimes uncomfortable tale. A series of people are led to a resort where you can partake of your deepest desires, for a price. Although the subtitle is "A book of raunch," Nicholson Baker relays these tales with surprising sensitivity. It's like nothing I've ever read before and very entertaining.

Sea of Glass by Barry B. Longyear
Sea of Glass

711peterhoffman, December 23, 2013

Sea of Glass is one of the all time best dystopian future/science fiction novels I've ever read. Dark and intensely moving the narrative is superbly crafted and addictive. A great read for dark winter days.
