Diamond traces the history of human settlements around the world and why some succeeded and others didn't. His evidence is a fascinating mix of language studies and archeological evidence. Not a book you finish in one reading.

Main Street (Bantam Classics) by Sinclair Lewis

Written in 1920, the book captures the flavor of a small rural town and the not unreasonable (for that era) provincial views and prejudices of its citizens. Not much different than today although so many of these small towns have declined to almost nothing as people relocate to bigger towns and the large stores gather up the business.
