Stirling and Hot Air Engines: Designing and Building Experimental Model Stirling Engines by Roy Darlington
Stirling and Hot Air Engines: Designing and Building Experimental Model Stirling Engines

AMurph109, February 9, 2009

If you have any intention of building Stirling engines, this is a must-have book.

Roy's work has been showcased in other books, but here is info on the in-and-outs of making your own, covering things such as meterial selection and compatablity, machining and assembly tips and tricks, and a section explaining the art of making leather pump washers as needed for some of these engines.

Well worth the money spent, and if you were limeted to one book, this would be the one to get and work with and from, too!

Build A Two Cylinder Stirling Cycle Engine by David J. Gingery
Build A Two Cylinder Stirling Cycle Engine

AMurph109, February 4, 2009

This is a book for the advanced hobbyist, as the engine design relies heavily on the use of home made castings, as does almost all of Dave Gingery's work.

Given this caveat, there are no parts here that can't be made by a good hobby machinist out of flat, bar, or round stock, and the engine is a good, sound design that will show you how to make an engine that will be the envy of many who see it.

An excellent book for its price, and recommended for it's insights to producing parts by castings as such.

Stirling Engine Design Manual by William R Martini
Stirling Engine Design Manual

AMurph109, February 3, 2009

This is a very detailed scientific report on design parameters of Stirling engines that have been produced for commercial and experimental applications, and the computations involved for determining how to maximize the design for optimal performance.

This is a book for the advanced designer, covering Finklestein, Rios, and Schmidt formulas for checking design concepts along with examining the merits of alternate gasses and pressurising the engine for optimal power output.

This is an excellent starting point for the dedicated researcher on a little-known source of clean power for the 21st century and beyond.

Introduction to Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engines by James R. Senft
Introduction to Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engines

AMurph109, February 3, 2009

If you have any inclinations to make a low temperature differential Stirling engine, this is the definative book for any calculations and dimentional issues in making your engine a success.

Dr. Senft takes the history behind these engines and makes the science understandable to the layman, while defining the mathematics for the technician or scientist, along with demonstrating the tips and pitfalls to avoid.

If you have any serious interest in Stirling engines, this book has a place on your bookshelf.
