Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter) by Garr Reynolds
Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter)

APF, October 9, 2012

This book was recommended to me by a person who makes their living helping people turn presentations (bland, long, bullet-riddled Powerpoints) into stories that move people. While it might seem slender, the results I achieved with it were profound. In less than a year, in Japan, Europe, and the US, I achieved more in business than I have ever before.

Basically, stop competing with your slides and with your message. Tell a story with spoken words, images and design. If you need to convey a lot of information - tell your audience, don't make them read while trying to listen to you.

If they need written information, create a leave-behind. Your presentation should convey ideas in a way that complements you, the presenter and makes you the center of the event. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about, or who makes a living from, communicating with people.

This book also highlights a wider theme - less is more in every form of communication. Fewer, well-chosen words always achieve more than rambling verbosity.. Logorrhea, either as a narcissistic tendency or because of a lack of organized thinking, alienates the listener and makes success less likely. Now I am going to go back and edit this comment lest find I have run on. :)
