The Whirling Circles of Ba Gua Zhang: The Art and Legends of the Eight Trigram Palm by Frank Allen
The Whirling Circles of Ba Gua Zhang: The Art and Legends of the Eight Trigram Palm

An enjoyable book on Bagua an internal martial art that focuses on using Chi to attack and defend instead of pure muscle power. I particularly like the way Mr Allen includes stories of the Bagua masters because it provides a human element to the techniques of training.

Chi Gung: Chinese Healing, Energy, and Natural Magick by L. V. Carnie
Chi Gung: Chinese Healing, Energy, and Natural Magick

Alan Hutchson, April 19, 2009

I enjoy learning about alternative approaches to health and healing. I've recently been exploring Traditional Chinese Medicine and its practice of energy work known as Chi Gung (also called QiGong ). My wanderings eventually led me to Lily Carnie's wonderful guidebook. She provides a good overview of the components of Chi Gung covering topics like the way Chi flows through the body's meridians. However, I particularly like the way the she describes how to practice Chi Gung during activities like candle meditation or playing a musical instrument. It's quite an eclectic and innovative approach that does a great job making the practice enjoyable and engaging to people like me who were raised in a Western culture and have an curiosity about Eastern healing practices.
