Farcical and sometimes nearly too true to be funny. The satire may hit a little too close to home for many Californians. It has a different feel from Robillard's online writing, but he doesn't seem to have had any trouble moving into the novel format.

It has been a little while since I read this book, but it certainly stood out among the fiction I've read in the last ten years. I've given it as a gift to several friends and family members. Forbes uses language skillfully--something I find very important in a good work of fiction. It was an all around well written mystery with fascinating characters and Forbes includes historical and geographical information about the Himalayas and Tibet without ever making the book feel contrived. Every detail is an important part of the story.
