An amazing follow up to Amanda Downum's first novel, Drowning City. Once again, Ms. Downum features a strong female protagonist- the necromancer and spy Isyllt- unraveling a twisted plot for the overthrow of her kingdom in a world full of mystery, magic, espionage and adventure. This is definitely one of the best books of 2011 for its challenge to traditional gender roles, its fresh take on necromancy and hemalurgy, and its fast-paced enthralling plot.
An amazing read. Amanda Downum writes a fast-paced, thrilling fantasy.
Her style is in the vein of Jacqeuline Carey and Octavia Butler. Her strong female protagonists are free agents with as much political and social force as the males and continue to maintain healthy relationships with other females. Her constructed universe explores the pluipotency of human abilities, desire, relationships, and love.
She is one of the best authors of our time and a pleasure to read.
