The book Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls wins my best book of the year for pure grit and determination. Of the character that is. The unsentimental story about Jeannettes grandmother is hard to put down, taking you through her entire life of adventure, made possible by her indomitable personality, which you come to admire and love. The book inspires the idea that character is built on how one responds to life, no matter how much of nothing you start with. This womans clarity of purpose and the risks she takes to follow her instincts makes for really good reading. It also helped that I was in New Mexico and drove right past Red Rock while I was reading the book, so I saw what she had to work with.
This book, this project, is very timely and powerful. I just saw Robert Shetterly in person with about 15 of his portraits of Americans Who Tell the Truth. The portraits are first rate, and the quotes, scratched into the paint, very moving and inspiring. This is his response as an artist to the political shenanigans after 911. But it isn't about 911. It is his search and discovery of the people throughout our history who where courageous enough, when justice was not being brought to bear, to tell the truth and bring about change.
