I am a HUGE fan of this author. For any who have not read her books, I highly reccommend them. This is book four of her series and you will really apreciate knowing the backstory of all the characters.
Butch, a former cop, became involved in the Brotherhood in the first book. Since then, he has been on the outskirts...because he is human, he is unable to truly be a part of the Brotherhood, but he knows too much about them to be allowed to return to his former life. Captured by the Brotherhood's enemy and tortured, he is thrust in the middle of their war.
Butch has fallen in love with Marissa, the king's former "wife", however, he thinks she turned her back on him in order to find someone from the aristocracy who would be more appropriate for her. Marissa, who thought Butch never really loved her is now given the opportunity to be near him as she helps him recover from his capture and torture.
There is SO MUCH going on in this book. The book revolves around the war between the "lessers" and the Brotherhood. While Butch and Marissa are the central characters, the others play a very prominent role. If you have read the previous books, you have already fallen in love with them and know they jump off the page and stay in your heart. They each have a special gift, however, the author did not go in to as much detail this time about what they are. As always, you are left anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.
