Too Close to the Falls by Catherine Gildiner
Too Close to the Falls

Anara, January 1, 2011

I read a lot of memoirs and this is one of the best I have read in years: funny without being maudlin, dramatic without being melodramatic. Life in a small town near Niagara Falls in the fifties: a particular slice of time, experienced through the eyes of an unusual child. That she grew up to become a therapist is no surprise, for the author has empathetic insights into the pain and pride that makes humans do the crazy things they do: even going over the falls.
