Under the Glacier

Andrew Dolson, January 3, 2011

Years ago, I read The Sagas of the Icelanders, with a preface by Jane Smiley, and they just lodged in my mind. A friend similarly struck recommended Haldor Laxness, and I began, for no particular reason, with Under the Glacier. And there they were, the same laconic Vikings, the same leaden, lowering sky, the same startling juxtaposition of the plain workaday world of rural Iceland with sudden, unexplained elements of the supernatural. Although rather different sorts of writers, I love Laxness' Under the Glacier for some of the same reasons I'm attached to Garcia Marquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude.
