Absorbing and thought provoking, The Golden Compass is an epic that feels both familiar and timeless.
Young Lyra, is left by herself, at an Ivy league type University, after she is told that her parents have died. Events unfold as the author Phillip Pullman paints exceptional detail on a new world for the reader. In this world, every human has part of their soul in the form of a Daemon. Daemon's are constant companions, which take on some aspects of their owner's behavior. The Golden Compass is the first novel in a trilogy that follws Lyra as she heads toward the destiny that everyone else knows is written for her, but which no one can tell her about.
By turns chilling and thought provoking, this book is a serious look at what a "zombie war" truly would do to civilization. This book is told in a series of hundreds of personal stories from around the world, tied together by the person interviewing them all. The reader is drawn in by each and every one of these stories. I have to say this was a book I wasn't expecting to take very seriously, and it ended up being one I can't stop thinking about.
