The Viral Storm: The Dawn of a New Pandemic Age by Nathan Wolfe
The Viral Storm: The Dawn of a New Pandemic Age

Ann S, January 2, 2012

Nathan Wolfe is a researcher at Stanford whose focus is microbes, especially those which make humans ill. That sounds terribly dry, but this book is anything but dry. It's a fascinating look at how microbes evolve to carry illnesses such as HIV or Avian flu from an animal populace into humans. In fact this book inspired the movie "Contagion" and Wolfe acted as a consultant on the film. Every paragraph is interesting -- illuminating and beautifully written. He's the kind of writer you'd like to sit down with over coffee -- and I never imagined saying that about a microbiologist.

The Lake Shore Limited by Sue Miller
The Lake Shore Limited

Ann S, September 1, 2011

This novel tells about a group of people affected by 9/11/2001. It's beautifully written (like everything by Sue Miller) and the responses were complex and changed over time. I especially liked the playwright and how Miller gradually reveals that she is more affected than we realize at first.
