A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

Anna Shumaker, March 1, 2012

Unexpectedly loved it. I don't know what I was expecting when I started this book but it blew away all expectations. I had not anticipated a mystery involving the complexities of love and individual histories. At points Goolricks insights into human nature reminded me of East of Eden by Steinbeck which is one of my favorite books so that is a huge accomplishment. I frequently felt like I knew what was coming and loved I was always surprised.

Blood Work: A Tale of Medicine and Murder in the Scientific Revolution by Holly Tucker
Blood Work: A Tale of Medicine and Murder in the Scientific Revolution

Anna Shumaker, March 1, 2012

I love a medical history book as much as the next gal but this left something to be desired. As with many nonfiction books I feel like Tucker tried to tie too many unrelated stories together. Of course I understand all historical events are related but at points it felt like the book would have been better if told in vignettes about how each region was approaching blood transfers. Over all pretty good but there are better medicinal history books I prefer.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck
Travels with Charley: In Search of America

what shocked me most about this book was how many observations are still relevant today, and how many of predictions came true.

The Wild Things by Dave Eggers
The Wild Things

Anna Shumaker, December 14, 2009

I really just wanted to express how happy I am with my Indispensable subscription. This is my third package and I enjoyed the others and was very much looking forward to this one. It arrived on my birthday in such nice packaging I considered putting it on the table with the rest of my presents but temptation got the better of me and I loved every bit of it. So thank you Powell's for my wonderful birthday present, you have yet to disappoint me.

Alice Waters and Chez Panisse: The Romantic, Impractical, Often Eccentric, Ultimately Brilliant Making of a Food Revolution

Great book for anyone interested in good food. Alice is focused on local seasonal food and this book explains the importance of that.
