You Can Draw in 30 Days: The Fun, Easy Way to Learn to Draw in One Month or Less by Mark Kistler
You Can Draw in 30 Days: The Fun, Easy Way to Learn to Draw in One Month or Less

Annette Richards, August 22, 2011

I just borrowed this book from our public library and our 13 year old daughter picked it up, grabbed a pencil and notebook, and spent the next few hours drawing and shading spheres, many, many spheres. Her siblings were so impressed with her 'animated' spheres that two of them have taken up pencils and paper and are following the lessons, too. "You Can Draw in 30 Days: The Fun, Easy Way to Learn to Draw in One Month or Less" is divided into short lessons, but our daughter's enthusiasm has carried her through the first 21 lessons in one week's time - so "or Less" is quite accurate. She has worn two pencils down to stubs. The ease of making scrolls and waves has surprised her and she says that drawing the flowers is quite fun. In this age of electronics I try to encourage arts, crafts, and penmanship whenever I can and this book is very user friendly and suitable for a wide age-range.

Journal Spilling: Mixed-Media Techniques for Free Expression by Diana Trout
Journal Spilling: Mixed-Media Techniques for Free Expression

Annette Richards, July 6, 2011

I'd love to keep a journal, draw and paint, but I am intimidated by white paper. I'm afraid that I will spoil the page whatever medium I choose.
"Journal Spilling," which takes its name from the Japanese tradition of pouring out sake generously by overflowing each cup, encourages creativity and self-expression. I really like the projects in the book and with the shopping list and techniques illustrated I'm ready to face those blank journal pages. I also think that most of these projects could be done on full size art papers and displayed outside of a journal. The theme of the book is very theraputic with projects with titles like "Lean into Trust" and "Taming the Critic." A little art therapy is just what I need!
