I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Patchett has a lyrical writing style, which lends itself nicely to what is basically a love letter to opera. There were certainly some notable/quotable passages but while I found the plot and characters to be engaging, the ending fell flat for me.
I first heard of this book after a writer I admire purchased it on a whim of sorts at a local LA bookstore. I followed suit and bought it on my first trip to Powell's last month. At turns comical, relatable, ridiculously clever, and just plain ridiculous, Everything Was Fine Until Whatever doesn't fit neatly into any one genre, except that of "Like Nothing I've Ever Read Before." All in all, this was a quick and enjoyable read, as well as a nice change of pace from the fiction that comprises ~97% of all my book reading.
Powell's City of Books is an independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon, that fills a whole city block with more than a million new, used, and out of print books. Shop those shelves — plus literally millions more books, DVDs, and eBooks — here at Powells.com.
