A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R. R. Martin
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1)

Becky E, January 10, 2012

Martin unfurls the imaginary world of "A Song of Ice and Fire" with all of the subtle dexterity of a ream of satin, and it proves no less slippery. With the end of a preternaturally long summer that has lasted years beyond its time, winter is coming and brings a supernatural menace to the north of a glacially massive ice wall that protects the kingdom. Within the wall, however, safety is no less of an assurance as the house of Stark desperately tries to navigate and survive the fires of political turmoil in the corrupt south. After all, when you play the Game of Thrones, you must either win or die. The ensuing conflict is as engaging as it is complex, weaving the threads of a multitude of cultures, allegiances, families, and provinces into a multi-layered and satisfying tapestry. The novel is a triumph, remniscent of "The Tudors" sprinkled with a liberal dose of Tolkein. A must read.
