This is indisputably one of the two best books ever written about dog mushing, the Iditarod and the crazy obsession that both inspire. The scene in which Paulsen literally tries out his training wheels is matched in horrible hilarity in only one other book I have ever read. It is informative, terrifying, and very very funny. Five stars, easy.

Having begun to despair of Mr Connelly's future I was delighted to find he seemed to have made a swooping improvement with Echo Park. Harry Bosch is his usual glum self but not quite as depressing as the previous title. The plot and subplots and sub-subplots were suitably twisted and, actually, as I got into the book, a teensy bit predictable. Hmmmmm.... then I got to the end: not with a bang but a whimper. What has happened to Mr. Connelly's ability to end a story with a good loud bang?
Well, it's still a better read than most. And the action scenes are very skillfully done. Can't quite give it 5 stars, but it's close.
