The Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild in the Middle of Nowhere by Debra Marquart
The Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild in the Middle of Nowhere

Well-written, engrossing memoir about growing up in North Dakota. The author makes you sense the place, see, hear and smell it. It's enlightening to those of us with little or no knowledge of the history and the people who inhabit this part of our country.

Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow by Faiza Guene
Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow

Unique novel about life in a Muslim suburb of Paris written in the voice of a teenage girl. The author plops you right in the heart of life here including the angst of being an out-of-place teen to racial and economic realities. It's written with heart and humor.

Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World by Rita Golden Gelman
Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World

Bonnie, September 14, 2006

This is a fascinating account of a middle-aged woman who decides to follow her bliss and set off to see the world. But she does it as a backpacker with no home address, just going where the spirit moves her. It moves her from Mexico to Bali to the Galapagos to Israel, etc. In her writing she tells us about the incredible people she meets throughout the world. It's a marvelous account of people and their warmth and similarities everywhere, rather than their differences. Highly recommended.

Walking in Circles Before Lying Down by Merrill Markoe
Walking in Circles Before Lying Down

Funny, warm, entertaining book. Whether you like animals (and can suspend belief enough to believe they can speak to you) or not, this is a fine novel. Markoe is an Emmy-winning comedy writer and her wonderful sense of humor shines through.

There Is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children by Melissa Fay Greene
There Is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children

Bonnie, August 21, 2006

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this fine book. It's immensely readable and heartbreaking, yet wonderful. The strength of the human spirit shines through in this journal of AIDS orphans in Ethiopia. Their amazing stories are interspersed with the history of AIDS/HIV and the hubris of big drug companies worldwide. A book that NEEDS to be read by everyone who considers themself a caring human being.
