This Is Getting Old: Zen Thoughts on Aging with Humor and Dignity by Susan Moon
This Is Getting Old: Zen Thoughts on Aging with Humor and Dignity

Britton, January 29, 2011

I bought this book in part because of the title. It's amazing -- funny, useful, affirming, and full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from wry humour and reflection. Buy it!

Keeping a Nature Journal: Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You by Clare Walker Leslie
Keeping a Nature Journal: Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You

Britton, October 20, 2010

This is a book that keeps disappearing off my shelves ~ the kind of book that 'walks.' Everyone loves it: writers, journal keepers, science geeks, sketch artists, nature buffs. I've been following Clare Walker Leslie's work since her first book (which I also still own). She makes keeping a journal full of nature seem.. well, natural. Great for a holiday gift, but even better for yourself.

Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey. The Sweet Liquid Gold That Seduced the World by Holley Bishop
Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey. The Sweet Liquid Gold That Seduced the World

Britton, August 8, 2010

I admit that I'm slightly gaga over bees. But even for those who aren't, this is a great book. Full of history, natural science and the story of Donald the beekeeper -- as well as Bishop's own experiences raising bees -- the book is funny, fascinating and just plain fun.

The Peaceable Classroom by Mary O'Reilley
The Peaceable Classroom

Britton, August 8, 2010

Almost every year, when back-to-school mania grips teachers around the country, several of us re-read Mary Rose O'Reilley's The Peaceable Classroom. And each year the circle of teachers I know who rely on her unique blend of humour, insight and balance grows. Read this if you want to improve your own teaching, certainly. But read it, too, if you just want to know more about learning -- your own and others.

Water Touching Stone by Eliot Pattison
Water Touching Stone

Britton, January 1, 2010

When a piece of genre fiction reaches into your life and tugs, hard, it's amazing enough. But when a mystery set in an unknown country, peopled by characters w/ unpronounceable names, makes you feel part of the inner and outer landscapes of the book, the characters, the world... That's brilliance.
