¡Buenísimo! This is an excellent up-close look at the drug-fueled violence along the US-Mexico border. The concept -- the author starts his journey in Tijuana and San Diego, and ends it in Matamoros and Brownsville -- works well in telling this extremely absorbing story. It is well researched and, importantly, features the voices of people touched by and fighting the war on both sides -- and I don't just mean the border. Published in 2010, Amexica is frighteningly current. I couldn't put it down.

There is nothing I didn't like about this book -- the author's reflections on his (extra)ordinary collections, the good humor, the perspective it's given him (and me) on life and death and everything in between. Read nothing before reading Collections of Nothing. It's really something.
