The Lay of the Land: A Novel by Richard Ford

Carl, November 2, 2006

Richard Ford captures the everyday-man with language that has depth as well as simplicity. His characters represent the basis of people, despite their good and bad points. Ford has hit another homerun with the last story of Frank Bascombe.

The Willow Field by William Kittredge
The Willow Field

Carl, November 2, 2006

William Kittredge's writing captures the West for all its glory and tragedy. His sense of storytelling speaks to what writing is all about, and his words evoke poetry in motion. This story is of a boy who becomes a man while traveling in a landscape of memory. Kittredge is a masterful storyteller who should be read and cherished by all who value literature.

Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think, 2nd Ed by George Lakoff
Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think, 2nd Ed

carl, August 29, 2006

A detailed, academic book, yet quite readable. The nutshell version is Lakoff's "Dont Think of an Elephant". This book is essential to anyone attempting to have political influence through speaking or writing. Expertly decodes the words that manipulate minds.
Shows how to craft arguments that work on liberals and conservatives.
