Marvelous book -- part two of a trilogy but it stands alone very well. Fantasy, of a blind woman who sees gods and rescues one from a dumpster, perhaps. Rich and evocative and you'll like the characters.
Tiffany Aching is a witch, even though she doesn't wear midnight black. Her earlier challenges are told in Wee Free Men, etc., and in Midnight she's almost 16 and being treated as an adult even though she isn't, quite. But she's trying. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Og are in this story, as is the city of Ankh-Morpork.
A perfect small mystery. Dale Kinsall is a veterinarian who shares his life with Solly, a beagle. Together they solve crimes, even if they wish they didn't have to as they like a quiet life in Arizona. Wonderful for dog people, Tony Hillerman fans, and those who like character-driven mysteries.
Excellent story of 15 year old Liza whose sister is born with the signs of magic and was left in the woods to die. Fairies and humans battled and this book is about the aftermath, and about magic, and about being human. Liza is caring and brave and does what needs doing despite being abandoned by her mother and beaten by her zealot father to whom magic is a demon. There's a faithful cat, and a werewolf, and the soaring Gateway Arch of St. Louis. It's not depressing even though it's apocalyptic; it's...magical.
