The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen
The Sugar Queen

Christina Carlson, August 15, 2008

Even better than Garden Spells, this book has layers and layers of magic. Josey, Della Lee and Chloe will stay with you for a very long time. This is a wonderful story of love, forgiveness, bad choices, salvation and getting unstuck. The characters are multi-dimensional and totally human. Can't wait for Sarah Addison Allen's next book!

French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results by Jane Hardy Miller
French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results

Christina Carlson, January 17, 2007

Beautiful quilts are possible the very first time you use this book. The construction is not technically difficult but it is exacting. Read the directions over and over. There are general directions and specific directions which can be confusing and frustrating. Get some stickies to mark the pages you need to flip back to over and over. You need a bit of room as you will have 14 to 26 stacks of blocks to wrangle. Purge the sewing room of cats who might insist on helping; they are really no help on this project. You need a good color sense or a good friend who has one to help choose the 10 to 17 or more fabrics you will need. The fabric allowances are adequate and allow for a few mistakes in cutting. A fun and satisfying quilt that looks harder than it is and will impress your friends.
