Visiting Tom: A Man, a Highway, and the Road to Roughneck Grace by Michael Perry
Visiting Tom: A Man, a Highway, and the Road to Roughneck Grace

Michael Perry's writing makes me slow down, remember the value of neighbors and family, and laugh out loud when I'm supposed to be working quietly.

Thin Blue Smoke by Doug Worgul
Thin Blue Smoke

Colleen Frost, March 22, 2012

This novel is so rich that a short review can't do it justice. It's set at a BBQ joint in Kansas City where a cast of characters meets regularly and forms a loosely-knit family of sorts. All the "members" of this unconventional family have been disappointed by life and have themselves disappointed others, but the few moments of good food, music, kindness, spiritual discussions, and welcome that they receive make a huge difference in their lives. Two points of recommendation: Worgul's writing reminds me of Pat Conroy's and Richard Russo's. Also, our book club, which often pauses to address important topics such as the decline of our nation and the appeal of Johnny Depp, managed to devote almost two uninterrupted hours to discussing "Thin Blue Smoke" and gave it unanimous thumbs up.
