Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers by Anne Lamott
Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers

ConBrio, January 1, 2013

Of the many great new books I read this year, this has been the most helpful. Anne Lamott's straightforward confrontations of the little difficulties we make for ourselves, plus her hilarious off-center sense of humor, make this a useful book to dip into any time I am feeling discouraged or out of sorts. That is why it beat out Oddly Normal and Waging Heavy Peace, my two runner-ups.

The Logic of Failure: Recognizing and Avoiding Error in Complex Situations by Dietrich Dorner
The Logic of Failure: Recognizing and Avoiding Error in Complex Situations

ConBrio, August 4, 2012

Dietrich Doerner's The Logic of Failure is a fascinating read. He's talking about a serious subject - making complicated decisions in complex situations - and discusses it in a thoughtful, positive, and encouraging way. Some of his descriptions are irresistibly funny (as is the photo on the cover of the paperback edition), and others are grimly compelling - he gives a brief but thorough explanation of what exactly happened at Chernobyl, for instance. If you work in a complex system, you will benefit by reading this book.
