Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop by Otto Penzler
Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop

Daniel Cook, December 8, 2012

This anthology has become part of my Christmas traditions, re-reading these mysteries which all happened around The Mysterious Bookshop in New York City. Enjoying the different authors is a treat as the characters and styles change with each story, but all will entertain you. "I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus" and more, to get you in the Mysterious Christmas Spirit!

The Stories of Ray Bradbury (Everyman's Library Classics & Contemporary Classics) by Ray Bradbury
The Stories of Ray Bradbury (Everyman's Library Classics & Contemporary Classics)

Daniel Cook, June 8, 2012

With Ray Bradbury's passing this past week, accept my invitation to reread your favorite story or novel as a toast to this man's talent. My personal favorites include The Martian Chronicles (which I've been reading and rereading for over 40 years) and this huge anthology of short stories.

Good sailing and fair winds, Mr. Bradbury.

Street Player: My Chicago Story by Danny Seraphine
Street Player: My Chicago Story

Daniel Cook, May 26, 2011

Danny Seraphine tells many great stories about Chicago, and the good days when the band was climbing to the top. He has a great memory and gift for adding details which keep your interest and keep the stories moving along.

I rated this book a "4" instead of a "5" only because Danny tends to get too involved with his personal viewpoint, rather than trying to be more objective about what was happening with the rest of the members of the group.

Any fan of Chicago, especially the early years, will enjoy this history of the band.

A Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song by Steve Turner
A Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song

Daniel Cook, January 24, 2011

Steve Turner tells the story behind each song the Beatles recorded. Who came up with the title for "A Hard Day's Night?" You'd be surprised; he tells many great stories with the history of the songs we all grew up with. (Answer: "A Hard Day's Night" was a Ringo-ism, he was prone to drop these phrases at unexpected times.)

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again by Lisa Schroeder
Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again

Daniel Cook, January 8, 2010

I love to read cook books, but I don't buy many. This one, written by a local lady, has the food I enjoy: comfort foods which use everyday ingredients. After reading through her recipes, I can't wait to visit the restaurant! (Mother's Bistro, downtown Portland.)
