Street Player: My Chicago Story by Danny Seraphine
Street Player: My Chicago Story

Daniel Cook, May 26, 2011

Danny Seraphine tells many great stories about Chicago, and the good days when the band was climbing to the top. He has a great memory and gift for adding details which keep your interest and keep the stories moving along.

I rated this book a "4" instead of a "5" only because Danny tends to get too involved with his personal viewpoint, rather than trying to be more objective about what was happening with the rest of the members of the group.

Any fan of Chicago, especially the early years, will enjoy this history of the band.

A Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song by Steve Turner
A Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song

Daniel Cook, January 24, 2011

Steve Turner tells the story behind each song the Beatles recorded. Who came up with the title for "A Hard Day's Night?" You'd be surprised; he tells many great stories with the history of the songs we all grew up with. (Answer: "A Hard Day's Night" was a Ringo-ism, he was prone to drop these phrases at unexpected times.)

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again by Lisa Schroeder
Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again

Daniel Cook, January 8, 2010

I love to read cook books, but I don't buy many. This one, written by a local lady, has the food I enjoy: comfort foods which use everyday ingredients. After reading through her recipes, I can't wait to visit the restaurant! (Mother's Bistro, downtown Portland.)

Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Example and American Prospects by Dmitry Orlov
Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Example and American Prospects

Daniel Cook, November 12, 2008

Fascinating read; Mr. Orloff speaks from experience and has a lot of eye-opening stories of how people coped during the Soviet's collapse. He also demonstrates quite convincingly that our American experience is heading down the same road.
This is a fairly short book (I read it in one short night) with a good number of chuckles... the Russian people, of necessity, have a good sense of humor.

Joy of Cooking 1975 by Irma Rombauer
Joy of Cooking 1975

Daniel Cook, November 10, 2008

I have worn out several copies of Joy and given copies to my adult children. I have many cookbooks, but this is THE one for so many everyday recipes. When a new edition (with Ethan Becker) came out, I purchased it but was disappointed with those recipes.
This edition circa 1970s has many great recipes for both everyday and holiday celebrations. They vary from simple basic recipes which any beginner could enjoy to more complicated and challenging recipes.
Irma Rombauer and Marion Becker, the original authors, present cooking with clear explanations for the beginner. This is good food with an eye to nutrition, using everyday ingredients.
This would be an ideal gift for newlyweds or anyone starting out on their single life.
