Bisbee (Images of America) by Ethel Jackson Price
Bisbee (Images of America)

Daniel L Thomas, September 22, 2006

I am not sure most of us "Bisbeeites" would agree we are "a vibrant and eclectic community of ranchers, politicians, and free spirits," but I think we would agree that Ethel Jackson Price has done us a service for gathering and organizing the many photographs in her book, Bisbee. As a person interested in the documentation of history, I would have liked more written details although the usually brief paragraphs attached to each picture are interesting and informative. But, the result is less of a feel for the flow of life in Bisbee through its 130 plus years. Of course, this criticism it true of any "picture book." I thank her for including pictures of Bisbee which I have not seen before but some pictures are not directly of Bisbee (of Apaches and of participants in the Mexican Revolution, for example -- a full page picture of Ciya Nino Cochise seems especially inappropriate given the limited number of pages in the book) although those events cirtainly did impact people's lives in Bisbee. Finallly, there are only two pictures illustraing the importance of the railroad reaching Bisbee -- I know others exist.
