This book has a bit of a rough start, but it is an essential book to understanding where we are in the United States today, both in terms of the rise of the right wing and the decline of the left. It's also very engaging - Goldwater's personality emerges vividly, as do those of the many more obscure figures who drove the rise of movement conservatism in the early years. If you want to know how to bring your movement from wandering in the wilderness (figuratively at least) to the halls of power, start here.
