A brilliant follow up to "Sea of Poppies". The language sweeps you up into historical Canton immediately prior to the Opium War between China and England in mid 19th century. I am looking forward to third book in this trilogy very much.

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

My favorite read of the year. (Amitav Gosh's "River of Smoke" is a very close second and I have not gotten around to "1Q84" by Murakami yet)

A Corpse in the Koryo by James Church
A Corpse in the Koryo

Dexter, January 2, 2007

This is a wonderful debut novel. A detective/spy thriller that poetically and partially illuminates a dark corner of the of the world, North Korea. It is a combination of Ross Macdonald and Alan Furst. "Kimche Noir" wonderfully written. I look forward to future encounters with James Church's Inspector O.
