Kate Atkinson has written a tale that at first had me shaking my head trying to keep the characters straight. Put the book down and tried again later. It became an engaging story weaving the past and the present. A tale of lost children, stolen opportunity, and an unsolved murder.
I found this on my daughter's book shelf when I went to help her with her new child. I have read a lot of Mr. Moore but not this book. Another great book from Christopher Moore. His blend of fantasy and reality is engaging. One of those books you stay up late reading because you want to see where it leads.
This story weaves the tale of two women Zara and Aiide. The books goes back and forth between 1950's Estonia and the present day 1992. This was a difficult read given the subject matter of life under a changing Soviet and German regime and the dire circumstances of Zara. It explores the effects of violence on the women, the effect of living under the rule of an occupier. "Purge is a fiercely compelling and damning novel about the corrosive effects of shame, and life in a time and place where to survive is to be implicated."(from the jacket cover)
