Robot Dreams by Sara Varon
Robot Dreams

Emily Barrett, July 18, 2008

Man, first I discover Brooklyn's Mo Willems, and now I find another author/illustrator from Brooklyn, Sara Varon. My 3-year-old loved this book. The format was novel enough for him to really be intrigued, and the story was satisfying for both of us. Excellent. Sweet. Highly recommended. Getting this and her Cat an Chicken book in the mail was like getting a little package of happiness. Oh, and the art is emotionally spot-on and the color is great.

Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights by Hayden Childs
Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights

Emily Barrett, July 16, 2008

Disclaimer. I was one of the early readers for the author. I assume he chose me for a number of reasons. One of them was that I am not a music geek and I am not a typical 33 & 1/3 reader. The fictional device and Virgil Schlage's story pulled me along, and the Dante allegory added interest and complexity, to an already interesting journey into the lives of Richard and Linda Thompson at the time of the recording and touring for this album. When I discovered this album more than a decade ago I found it to be beautiful and haunting, and that was enough for me. Now that I've read the book I feel as though I have a deeper undestanding of both the lyrics and the emotional place from which Richard Thompson's lyrics and both Thompson's vocalizations sprang.

Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity by Mo Willems
Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity

Emily Barrett, July 16, 2008

Mo Willems writes books that parents enjoy reading and kids like hearing. He came to the Texas Book Fair last year and read Knuffle Bunny Too (so glad that he cleared up the pronunciation). It is a really fun read, with cartoons so spot-on that they capture parental chagrin and childhood moods, combined with background photos of his home town, Brooklyn. Sure the be a favorite in many homes. My three-year-old loves it. I do too.
