This quirky, beautifully written novel about a boy growing up in rural Idaho is one of the great unsung novels of the past decade. The simple and well-worn theme (a boy's coming of age story) turns into something fresh and new through Spanbauer's vivid use of description and the protagonist's unique, often funny voice. Spanbauer also perfectly captures the ethos of the (often forgotten) eastern half of the Northwest, teasing out the eccentricity and diversity hidden beneath its conservative, homogeneous skin. His earlier novel, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon, is one of my all-time favorite books, and I didn't think he could top it. But with Now Is the Hour, he has.
