Although written ten years ago, Paul Woodruff's Reverence: Renewing a Forgotten Virtue is a wonderful celebration of patterns of behavior that are essential to preserve cultures, societies, relationships and the living world we all need to survive without undue suffering.
In all of my forty-plus years or reading spiritual writings, this is one I keep coming back to. As global warming and wars seem to consume so much attention, Paul Woodruff's Reverence is a wonderful reminder of what is really important.
We are all influenced by the environment we find ourselves in. We sometimes struggle with our pasts. Sometimes we fret about the future. But the only influence we can really have is with what is happening at the moment we become aware that things are happening.
In the Buddhist realm this is referred to as mindfulness. It is part of the journey of embracing the sanity we are born with. And when dealing with misfortune or impending death, being mindful of ourselves and our value might be the best way to find happiness.
Coming to Our Senses is about healing ourselves and our world by being aware of what is happening where we are, and given the state of affairs in the world today, the insights it provides can benefit us all.
