Smile When You're Lying: Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer by Chuck Thompson
Smile When You're Lying: Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer

Faddah Yuetsu Wolf, July 8, 2010

Thompson rightfully skewers the dreadful sunny advertising writing of the travel industry, and gets to tales and stories he always wanted to, but never could, as a travel writer. At once both very ribald and insightful, it is a rollicking ride of a self-described rogue travel journalist. More than once I laughed out loud at his stories and descriptions and found myself nodding in agreement from my own experiences in world-wide travel, which always differ far and widely from what you may read in Lonely Planet web pages or guides or in travel writing magazines. Even if you never see yourself boarding a plane, boat or train to anywhere and prefer your lap top or your cozy den to any thought of travel abroad, this is still a very worthwhile and hilarious read. It is my top recommended book to anyone planning on traveling or anyone who asks me about my travels.
