Mississippi Flyway by Nel Rand
Mississippi Flyway

Franklin, December 10, 2006

Hilarious and hair-raising episodes, some endearing characters--and some truly grotesque ones--turn this Mississippi River Valley journey into more than an engaging page-turning flight from the Law. Elaborated with gambling, drinking, eating and good Cuban cigars?to say nothing of irony--it is an insightful look into both the inertia of family dynamics and the irresistible force of self-discovery and personal freedom. Even though the protagonist is a girl, I had no trouble relating to her trials and her adventures.

The Structure of English: A Handbook of English Grammar by Richard Hewby
The Structure of English: A Handbook of English Grammar

Franklin, September 6, 2006

This is an excellent text for teaching English structure at the sentence level. Rather than parse sentences, Newby demonstrates how the sentence--the largest unit of English grammar--is composed of smaller discrete units: morphemes (which account for the ability of our language to be inflected), words, phrases, and clauses. It is a descriptive grammar and particularly a study of structure, direct and simple. This is NOT the book for those wanting a prescriptive grammar. It does not attempt to address the myriad rules of usage, but it does clearly demonstrate the logic of sentence structure.
