The Given Day: A Novel by Dennis Lehane
The Given Day: A Novel

Gaye, February 9, 2009

The Given Day is Lehane's best book to date and I had a hard time putting it down. He provides a lot of history with this work of fiction and it's an excellent read for anyone who's interested in reading about America in the early Twentieth Century.

1999: A Novel of the Celtic Tiger and the Search for Peace (Irish Century) by Morgan Llywelyn
1999: A Novel of the Celtic Tiger and the Search for Peace (Irish Century)

Gaye, June 22, 2008

This is the final book in a series of the history of 20th century Ireland, but it's excellent as a stand-alone read if you're interested in what's happening there today and why and how it's come about. An excellent book to finish out an excellent series.

Playing for Pizza by John Grisham
Playing for Pizza

Gaye, April 6, 2008

This is an excellent book for anyone who enjoys food, travel, football, challenges, and/or a really good story. It made me want to pack my bags and head off to Italy (for the food, not the football).

The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe V. Wade by Ann Fessler
The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe V. Wade

Gaye, February 17, 2008

Many of us who are concerned about current efforts to overturn Roe v Wade talk about the bad old days of back alley abortionists and coathangers. The Girls Who Went Away are frequently forgotten. This sound like an excellent book on a subject that needs to be discussed. I knew girls who "went away" and suffered throughout their lives over the child they gave up. I believe these stories are going to remind us all of someone we knew.

Adventurous Women: Eight True Stories about Women Who Made a Difference by Penny Colman
Adventurous Women: Eight True Stories about Women Who Made a Difference

Gaye, March 12, 2007

This is an excellent book for girls (and women too, for that matter). We don't learn much about heroic women in school and this book provides interesting and detailed information about eight of them.
