English Creek by Ivan Doig
English Creek

Gramma Reader, April 30, 2013

As a mother of four and gramma of seven, I particularly enjoyed the attention that Ivan Doig gives to developing the characters, deftly detailing temperments and unique personalities of the family and friends of this young man, Jick. Rarely does one read a book written from the perspective of a 14 year old boy. It is not only insiteful and very believable, but nostalgically takes one back to their own teen age years and the musings and questions which constantly filled their thoughts. The story educates one on the rigors and responsibilites of the life of a Forest Ranger and his family. How many of us have wandered onto a Forest Ranger "Property", taken note of the neat and tidy tract house and grounds by the river and left with no idea of what a day
in the life of that family is like? For those who camp, hike and travel in the Pacific NW, it's not at all uncommon. What a rich, wonderful, relaxing, and memorable read!
