The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America by Timothy Egan
The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America

HappySnaps, August 4, 2012

This book is much more than a historical account of the large forest fire that ravaged the West at the turn of the century. What came as a surprise was the insight into American politics during that time and the "Aha!" moment when you realize that politics is very much the same today, with the wealthy few trying to manipulate the fate of the masses. Timothy Egan does a great job at relating Teddy Roosevelt's progressive thinking and how much he and men like Gifford Pinchot influenced the enormous changes taking place in America during that time.

Into the Forest by Jean Hegland
Into the Forest

HappySnaps, September 1, 2011

Into the Forest is one of those books that stays with you long after you've finished reading. It gets you to thinking about your own will to survive, and how you would fare if you found yourself in the same situation as the sisters in the book. What would you do? How well would you survive without having any modern conveniences? Recent natural disasters in the world have shown the importance of being prepared to take care of ourselves and our loved ones when our "normal" way of life is completely disrupted. This book is definitely food for thought.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (The Millennium Trilogy #3) by Stieg Larsson
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (The Millennium Trilogy #3)

HappySnaps, January 1, 2011

I loved the first two of Stieg Larsson's thrillers and thought this third book was the best of the three. It was full of action, suspense and the kick-butt heroine, Lisbeth Salander. A great read!
