Baseballissimo by Dave Bidini

Helen, April 25, 2007

It looks like baseball, but because it's in Italy, the uniforms are worn more stylishly, the snacks at the game are better, and even the trash talk sounds elegant. This book that pretends to be about baseball is as much about a young Canadian family living in small-town Italy for six months. Under the Tuscan Sun meets Moneyball. Bravo!

49 Up
49 Up

Helen, April 22, 2007

Every seven years the producers of the Up Series hunt down the subjects they've been following since they were seven years old. Now they're 49 and although that seems like a boring and settled age, 49 Up is just as mesmerizing as every previous episode. My favorite this time was the cabbie who bemoans the fact that his East London neighborhood is being overrun with immigrants -- as he sits in his villa in an English enclave on the coast of Spain!

Go in & Out the Window an Illustrated Songbook for Young People by Metropolitan Museum Of Art

Helen, February 26, 2007

Go in and Out the WIndow is my favorite gift for parents of new babies. My husband and I sang folk songs to our eight children. It was their first introduction to music and we enjoyed the old songs that we learned in grade school.
The artwort is varied and colorful and gives the little ones an exposure to the real thing, as oppossed to "children's art."
